About

What is MI SIBS?

MI SIBS exists to provide adult siblings of individuals with disabilities with the information, resources and support to advocate with and/or for their brothers and sisters and to promote leadership roles of siblings within the disability community.

What is the purpose of MI SIBS?

The purpose is to establish a network of siblings who share the common experience of having a sibling with a disability and to connect them to social, emotional, governmental, and provisional supports across the lifespan so siblings can be better advocates with their brothers and sisters with disabilities.

What is the goal of MI SIBS?

Our goal is to support siblings of people with disabilities in Michigan. We provide information, create welcoming communities for siblings, and improve access to sibling connections through local quarterly events and hope to organize a statewide event/conference each year. We offer peer support that may generate opportunities for emotional growth, can aid in making connections with services and supports from those who have “been there,” and can enable a stronger and more fulfilling bond with a brother or a sister.

What ways are there to advocate for my sibling?

Advocacy begins by being well informed about a situation that requires change. It also requires identifying people in power to effect change. Effective advocates are passionate in their belief that advocacy can be accomplished indirectly and directly on many levels with brothers and sisters. Each local sibling group can offer assistance with advocacy through local Arc chapters and can connect people to other siblings locally who may be able to offer advice and assistance when necessary.

Is MI SIBS a member of the Sibling Leadership Network?

YES! The Sibling Leadership Network is a national organization composed of self advocates siblings, family members, and professionals.

Where is MI SIBS?

MI SIBS is a group of individuals throughout the state of Michigan. It is currently being organized through the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute.
